Mali

Mali, situated at the crossroads of seven sub-Saharan countries, is a transit country for very many people who want to reach Europe. Many Malians, of all socio-economic groups, also attempt this journey, deemed to be worthwhile, to the north. At the same time, European immigration policies are hardening. A growing number of people who have been deported or refused entry find themselves, forced back to Bamako.

Improving access to mental healthcare for forcibly returned migrants

Bamako, Kayes and Nioro towns in the Sahel - long term.

ACTIVITIES

MdM is training the staff of our two partner organisations so that they can better welcome, listen to and provide psychological support to migrants who have been forcibly returned. The project also aims to set up a referral network, made up of national professionals with enhanced skills in treating psychological trauma.
Finally, this skills transfer process will be supplemented with an awareness-raising and information campaign on migration in general and the traumatic impact of forcible return, in order to tackle the discrimination which migrants often face.

RESULTS

1,061 migrants seen by AME and ARACEM (at least an interview and a counselling session).

OUTLOOK

This is a priority issue for the organisation. MdM wants to create links between migrant projects in France and overseas. In 2011, activities concerning the physical health of migrants will be expanded and the advocacy activities further reinforced by supporting the local networks to improve the collection of relevant data.

Providing care and psycho- logical support to women with obstetric fistulas

Mopti - long term.

ACTIVITIES

The programme provides women in Mopti region with psychological support and help to re-integrate into families and communities. It also carries out awareness-raising and prevention activities in the communities. MdM’s work enables reparatory surgery for obstetric fistulas, carried out by Malian surgeons in Sominé Dolo hospital in Mopti, to be performed. MdM ensures the quality of the surgery by regularly sending surgeons to offer further training and to operate on complicated cases.
Psychological support is provided at several opportunities for the patient and her companion. Awareness-raising sessions to encourage deliveries in health centres are carried out throughout Mopti, amongst community leaders and health agents.

RESULTS

165 operations carried out on 140 patients. 130 women benefited from psychological support.

OUTLOOK

MdM has been working to care for vesico-vaginal fistulas in Mopti since 1993. A withdrawal strategy has been introduced to ensure complete handover to the hospital’s trained surgeons in 2013. A local organisation will gradually take over the psychological support activities.
