In 2001, with a high prevalence of domestic and sexual violence, in particular against women and children, the government has made this problem a public health priority. MdM is involved with the victims in one of the poorest regions, where the population suffers from various diseases related to social or sanitary conditions, undoubtedly a risk factor for violence.

Caring for victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Puerto Cabezas, North Atlantic Autonomous Region- Long term

ACTIVITIES

MdM has set up a multidisciplinary network, bringing together voluntary sector and institutional partners, in order to provide medical, legal and social support for victims of violence. At the same time, MdM trained and raised awareness amongst health professionals and people from voluntary sector partners and civil society to help better identify and deal with cases of violence. MdM set up a system to provide medical care to victims, and organised training workshops and awareness building activities orientated towards the male population to show them new types of family relationships based on respecting the dignity and rights of each individual.

RESULTS

3,096 people benefited from these activities (women, children, adolescents, community leaders, health personnel, local NGOs).

OUTLOOK

At the end of June 2010, MdM concluded the handover of the project to the local partners, members of the network. MdM aims to extend its activities in the region with a new project promoting access to sexual and reproductive health for women.

Tackling cervical cancer.

Quilalí and San Bartolo- Long term

ACTIVITIES

Since October 2007, MdM has helped and trained medical workers in Quilali and San Bartolo to screen and treat pre-cancerous cervical lesions. One doctor and three nurses have been trained. Consultations and treatments are carried out through mobile clinics in the villages, in order to reach the greatest number of women possible.

RESULTS

More than 5,619 smear tests were carried out (4,023 initial screenings, 1,596 follow ups), 313 pre-cancerous cervical lesions, screened and treated.

Five women suffering from advanced cervical cancer were diagnosed and transferred to the capital for treatment.

OUTLOOK

The team is now autonomous and the Ministry of Health has taken over the programme. Tackling cervical cancer has become a national priority.
