The status of expatriates and preparation for departure - Recruitment - Act - Médecins du Monde

The actors in the field taking part in Médecins du Monde humanitarian programmes sign either:

• An international solidarity “volunteer contract”

Regardless of the length of the contract, Médecins du Monde takes responsibility for:

- Transport from home to wherever the programme is based
- Accommodation during the programme
- Living expenses and food paid via a “per diem” (total amount paid to volunteer once s/he in the field based on the cost of living in the country and the programme type).
- A monthly allowance 800 euros (all posts) or 915 euros (coordination posts only) paid into the volunteer’s home account.
- All volunteers are covered by social protection, the terms of which vary depending upon the length of the contract and on the expatriate’s country of origin.

- Volunteers are covered by insurance as follows:

*Health risks and accidents at work are covered by social security, as long as the expatriate staff has declared their departure for the programme.

• A salaried contract:

As part of its programme to develop the loyalty of its coordinators and officers, Médecins du Monde has, in the last few years, opened certain paid posts. The contract is governed by French law.

Preparing for departure:

Médecins du Monde organises a departure preparation class several times a year. It is intended for future expatriate staff to give them the ability to successfully prepare for departing for their respective overseas programmes. It also allows recruitment staff to refine their work in preparing future candidates for departure. This training lasts 3 days and is in no respect skills training.
