Volunteers

THE STRENGTH OF THEIR COMMITMENT

All Médecins du Monde missions rely on the commitment of volunteers: doctors, nurses, lab technicians, psychologists, jurists, managers, logistics experts etc.

The involvement of members of the medical and paramedical professions is the result of a deliberate professional and ethical choice.

  • I’m a student and want to do an internship in the field internationally. Is this possible?

Only internships within France are possible; only proven professionals in their respective fields are sent overseas.

  • Do internships count for the two years’ professional experience?

Yes, however only for midwives and doctors

  • Can I go on an international mission over my holidays?

The average in-field assignment for expatriate staff is for 6 months.

Only emergency programmes or specific training may offer contracts lasting only a few weeks.

  • I won’t be available until a year from now. Can I still apply? I need between 6 months to a year to get ready for my departure. Can you tell me what positions would be available by that time?

The nature of our activities and the contexts of our intervention do not allow us to project that far into the future for available positions. Assignments are only set 4 to 6 months in advance.

  • Can my family or partner accompany me on my assignment?

Yes: For some development programmes, it is possible to leave for a mission of one year or more with your family or partner, provided the security and isolation of the programme permit it. Under these conditions, Médecins du Monde will assume some of the costs inherent for a family departure and individual housing is provided. It is likewise possible for a couple to be sent on mission for two positions matching with your respective professional experience.

  • Does the association provide training in humanitarian professions?

There is only a pre-departure training for educating future expatriate staff in the work and tools of Médecins du Monde and intercultural awareness. There are at present a certain number of curricula at schools and universities for humanitarian professions. These curricula, while professional in the main, do not exempt you from the requirement of 2 years’ professional experience, which are strong assets for candidates.

  • What is the required level for languages?

The minimum level required is working knowledge (being comfortable enough for public speaking and discussions). This level, which is routinely tested during the pre-interviews or interviews, varies according to position. Administrative and coordination positions demanding a great deal of writing and public representation require both written and oral command of a language.

  • I don’t live in France. Can I apply to Médecins du Monde France?

Yes: Médecins du Monde recruits its expatriate staff from all over the world.

  • How is the security of expatriate staff ensured?

The security of the programmes and teams is an essential component of any humanitarian intervention. Médecins du Monde ensures the greatest security possible for its teams by:

- Briefing and training expatriate staff,

- The implementation of security and evacuation protocols,

- Continuous analysis of the contexts in which our programmes operate.

Nonetheless, expatriate staff who do not feel themselves safe on a programme are always free to terminate their stay with advance notice without prejudicing future assignments.

  • Can I choose my destination?

Yes: You can either respond to a posting for a position and a particular country or send us an unsolicited application specifying your continent or our preferred programme country. We recommend carefully considering the type of position, programme, level of security and isolation in your research before applying. To help you with this, we invite you to come to an information briefing, visit our website and to talk it over with your family and/or friends.

  • My application was not accepted. Is this a permanent rejection?

We encourage you to periodically review the list of vacancies, as the needs from the different areas regularly change.

  • Is volunteer experience factored into calculating my pension?

Regardless of whether you go on international mission as a volunteer or salaried staff, Médecins du Monde will contribute to your retirement to the French pension funds.

  • How can I join MDM?

Members elect the Board of Directors and ratify the narrative and financial reports at the General Meetings. Any member can stand election to the Board of Directors of within the regional colleges. All members receive the magazine “Actualité” (News), which reports on ongoing programmes and decisions. Membership to Médecins du Monde France requires a commitment in the field at one of the MDM programmes in France or abroad.
